These are pictures of Fort Mackinac built to defend the island! There are two forts on the island. Forte Holmes, originally Fort George under the British, which is the highest point of the Island was built by the British in 1814 as they were engaged in the war of 1812. This fort never functioned as an independent military outpost it was always a dependent outpost of Fort Mackinac. The American military took over the both forts in 1815 under the terms of the Treaty of Ghent. ROM
